Eleanor Sabin, With Teeth - Original Painting
12 x 16 inches
India ink and airbrushed acrylic on paper
Eleanor Sabin’s work is based on her interest in how society defines and utilizes the natural world in an environment increasingly affected by industry, climate change, and digital interventions. Her examinations of the landscape take many forms, from detailed pen and ink drawings to photographs, traditional wood sculpture to site-specific installations. Born and raised in Westchester, NY, Sabin attended the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating with a BFA in Sculpture in 2006. She received her MFA in Sculpture from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2016 where she was an Annual Merit Award recipient.
"My work is based on the ways in which our society defines and utilizes the natural world in an increasingly digital and industrial environment. I use the conceptual framework of a spectrum - ranging from the Manufactured to the Grown - to assess the themes and materials related to my work. Rejecting the traditional binary of manmade vs. organic allows a more inclusive exploration of things, beings, and systems that present as natural, but are intrinsically more industrial than they first appear. My practice is an exploration of that blurred area near the center of the spectrum wherein the organic and the synthetic overlap, transform, and merge.
I find inspiration for my artwork in environmental issues, ecological systems, and my interactions with the landscape. In my drawings, I use color, shape, and form as emblems of man-made conflict embodied in the digital, the climatic, the architectural, or the industrial. Superimposed on the landscape, these fabricated, geometric elements disrupt the system of growth established by the natural setting. The effect is a feeling of reverberation, an echo of the discord between the unfolding organic setting and the interfering synthetic elements."
