Nicolle Cure is a Colombian-American artist living and working in Miami. In 2018, Nicolle was the sole recipient of the Leaders with Disabilities Scholarship awarded by Americans for the Arts for her work raising awareness about hearing loss and invisible disabilities.
Her art has been showcased at Miami Art Week and Art Basel Miami, and at art fairs from South Korea and China to Colombia. Her work is also sold at selected West Elm stores in the United States and it has been featured in several magazines and blogs, focused on both fine art and hearing health.
Nicolle earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Advertising from the University of Florida and an Associate in Arts in Computer Arts Animation from Miami Dade College. She also holds academic certificates from the Sotheby's Institute of Art.
Tell us about the specific pieces you're showing in "Chromatic." Can you give us a bit of insight into your process of creating them and what do you hope viewers take away from seeing them?
With all the noise, sorrow, and the overall heaviness of the world these days, I aim to create pieces that soothe and inspire kindness. With my art, I aim to transform a dark place (physical and mental) into a bright and calm state of mind.
Which is your favorite of the ones presented?
This is such a hard question because each painting has its unique energy and personality. I enjoyed the creative process of all the pieces. However, one that jumps to mind immediately is Milky Way Sunset (pictured above). Lately, my art has been inspired by the beautiful color combinations of cotton sky sunsets in Miami: Salmon and pink tones mixed with light blues. Sunsets are incredibly calming.
What are a few must-haves in your studio right now?
A clay rib, a fork (I use it to create textures and lines), and acrylic ink are a must in my studio.
What role does color play in your art?
My background heavily influences my work – the folklore, the rich colors, and the rhythms of my Colombian-Lebanese roots combined with the mixed culture of Miami inspire my vibrant and dynamic color palette. In my works, colors are just as important as the shapes and emotions they represent.
Just for fun! What's your favorite color?
Another hard question, because I love color so much and I gravitate towards different tones! However, I would say my favorite color these days is orange. It keeps me happy and energized. It is such a powerful color.
